HP Guardian has the following objectives:
To engage individuals and businesses in contributing to global conservation by allowing individuals and businesses:
- to 'adopt' plots in protected areas throughout the world using geobrowser technology (Google Earth, Google Maps),
- to fund projects of their choice that come in for conservation work in IUCN I-VI (nationally designated) protected areas through a community forum and voting mechanism,
- to fund specified projects by a specific NGO or consortium of NGOs by contributing to a tied-fund,
- to receive multimedia updates on the conservation, education and community activities that have taken place with their donations at least annually,
- to contribute to conservation by donating time to help map and monitor protected areas and project sites using geobrowser based 'geo-wiki' technology.
To support small to medium conservation organisations throughout the world by:
- Providing customised access to Guardian from their websites, for their projects to provide plot adoption based engagement with donors for project-tied funding,
- providing custoimised access to mapping from their websites, for their projects to integrate and provide accessible conservation-relevant geographic data for their projects,
- integrating the work of many conservation organisations within a geo-context to increase project dissemination and memory, avoid duplication of effort and provide a single conservation geoportal.
To raise awareness of specific threats to protected areas and the potential solutions to them by:
- providing open access geo-browser based visualisation of threats to protected areas,
- providing tailored educational materials to contribute to school cirricula,
- integrating the work and projects of many conservation organisations in a geobrowser based context.
